SEARS 572 March 12, 2004 Launch Report

The Southeast Alabama Rocketry Society held a launch on March 12th, 2005 at Samson, AL. The weather was challenging; The winds were 15 to 23 mph with one gust of 28 mph. With the high winds, the altitude was limited to 1500 feet. The skys were sunny with temps between 60 and 75 degrees. The concensus was it was a enjoyable launch dispite the wind. There were 18 flyers with 70 flights total.

Our feature event was Space Exploration Day. There were fifteen space launches including George Gassaway's Shuttle below. Randy Wiggins won the draw and chose a Launch Pad Bullpup from the prize pool.

We were pleased to have The Birminham Rocket Boys, NAR 665, as guests at our launch. In the pic below are left to right David Rowe, Ron Witherspoon and George Gassaway. Not shown are Randy and Verna DeArman. Randy has fostered fellowship and a exchange of ideas between BRB and SEARS 572. Ron left us some BRB promotional items that were great and good ideas for SEARS 572 to try. The BRB club has done an excellent job of publicity and outreach to schools. Their web site is at

The Pace and Liberty County TARC teams participated. The Pace team had a 53 second flight with two eggs in the two stage cluster rocket shown below. The target is 60 seconds. We wish all area teams good luck to quailfy by April 10th for the national finals in Great Plains, VA.

The flight of the day was George Gassaway's Sun Seeker. It can be seen below making a path to the sun. Photo by Randy DeArman. George is a master modeler and does many projects with boost gliders. His web site can be found here.

The most miraculous flight of the day was Chris Short's streamer rocket. See photo and description by Randy DeArman here.

Jack Kale briefed us on new range rules that will limit altitude based on where we are setup, the wind direction and the wind speed. Details will be posted on the web site soon. Thanks to Jack for providing signs and additional fire extinguishers. Likewise thanks to Kendall Brent for donating a launch rail to the club. The next launch is planned for April 2nd 2005 in Samson, AL and the event is "Return of the Peeps"
