April 3, 2004 Launch Report

The Southeast Alabama Rocketry Society held a launch on April 3rd, 2004 at Samson, AL. The weather conditions were fair skies with temps between 50 and 70 degrees. Winds were 10 to 15 mph.  There were 27 flyers with 116 flights total. We were fortunate to have many newcomers to the launch including by last  name; Alexander, Brent, Page, and Moore.  I encourage newcomers to subscribe to our email list via the web site so you will get the latest info.

We had two club events. The first was a mass launch of CD rockets. We were sucessful at getting all 24 to launch on the first attempt. Jonathan Page's CD landed closest to the pad and he selected a Holverson Swinger boost glider from the prize pool. Our second event was a Peep Open Spot Landing Contest. Gary Goldenbaum won this event by launching a Super Big Bertha "Peep Bus" with a payload of seven peeps. One of Gary's peeps landed on parachute 99' 5'' from the target.  Gary selected an Estes Outlander kit from the prize pool.

The Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) teams were busy with practice flights, two teams from Bristol and one from Pace. The TARC rockets are very unique and have unique names like Pink Lemonade and Martian Maggot. The TARC is indeed challenging and the rockets are more complicated than rockets our regular members fly.

The high power "Flight of the Day" was Drew Johnson's scratchbuilt 15 lb SlowPoke on a AMW K570. The flight was one mile high and landed well within the site. Drew Johnson and Frank Jones have formed Tripoli Perfecture # 38.

The range fee and donations at the field is covering our porta-potty expenses and any additional will be used to improve our launch equipment. Our next launch will be May 8-9 at Samson AL.
